Upcoming Reports

Report Card marks are due in the office on November 1st, so all the tests, assignments, and projects due this week are time sensitive. I will report all the marks that I have, but if tests are incomplete or assignments unfinished, they may reflect badly on percentage grades. Please remember that I can accept all overdue work until the end of each unit, but after that, it will not be accepted.

The long and short of this is to complete the assigned work A.S.A.P. Your report cards will reflect all the work that has been hand in by the end of this week.

Congratulations to all the winners from the magazine campaign draw! This year's sales were also big success (as usual). We should all thank Mr. Drader and his team for the bang-up job coordinating the campaign. Thanks also to all sellers and buyers!

Equinox Update

We are near the autumnal equinox (look it up if you don't know), so it's time for an update.

HEA 7: You should have completed your pair work assignments and gotten them returned. I know of some that are still out there and some students who need an individual copy. We'll get these wrapped up quickly.

Also our Healthy Walking project is going well. As long as we finish work in class time, we'll get even more kilometers under our belt.

HEA 6: We will continue talking about Influences on you Health this week and have a short assignment at the end. For now, keep track of your Physical Activity for our chart!

SCI 6: The tree classification day went great, so we'll move on to microscopic life shortly and wrap up our 'Diversity of Life' Unit in the next couple of weeks. Be prepared for more experiments and observations.

P.E. 6: We finish Soccer this week and move on to Volleyball. Lots of fun stuff ahead in gym class.

Wednesday, September 15, 2010

Upcoming Assignments

HEA 7: You will be working on your pair assignments related to decision-making. The questions will be ready to go next class, and finished work can be handed in when it is NEAT AND COMPLETE. Your 2 answers should be about one written page in length.

HEA 6 : We will begin next class looking at those influences that can effect your health. You have to complete the question related to Family and Cultural influence in your family for next class.

(Q: Think of 2 examples of each of the following (eating habits, physical activities, use of health services, and special observances) from your family and culture.)

SCI 6: We will start our tree field study on Friday. If the weather is good we'll collect samples. If not, I'll have some in class ready to use. Have your scissors and a collection bag ready for Friday a.m.

Health 7 Homework

There is homework for Grade 7 Health this week. We looked at how to make decisions (a six step list) and set goals (another six step list). Use these steps to complete the practice questions 1 and 2 from your notes. Just so we're clear, the questions are:

1. Go through the steps to decide whether you can miss a week of school to visit a friend in Paris. We’ll discuss the responses.

2. Your goal is to become a starter on the Junior basketball team. Go through the Goal Setting 6 step process, and we’ll discuss the responses.

(** You will probably only get to step 4 in both these cases since they are hypothetical - just for practice)

Back to School

Sorry to say it, but it is that time of year again. Hopefully we all had a relaxing and interesting summer, because learning is afoot.

I'll be teaching students in Grades 6 (only 6b, but I'll come visit you 6a's) and all grade 7's this year. I hope we can have a good year with lots of activity, learning and fun. I'll do my best to hold up my end of the bargain.

August 30th is the first day, and a Monday, so we'll see you then. Get ready for a flurry of activity on the first day - it is always hectic!

May 20

There was a small addition to the Copp family on May 13th - young Duncan. Thanks to everyone who has shared their congratulations (although, to be fair, my role was a lot easier than my wife's) and good wishes.

We are into the home stretch of the school year - 20 days left for Senior students and 25 for Juniors. That being the case, any students with assignments not turned in are getting closer to the cut-off date for accepting work. Get your work done now, or risk taking a zero on it.

ELA20: We will be doing our novel study for the next 4 weeks. Quizzes on content and vocabulary will be every Monday (or first school day of the week) until we are through. Keep up on your reading, participate with your groups, and get the questions, vocabulary and journal responses (1 per chapter) done. Keep in mind the themes from the novel will help you choose a research essay topic, so keep track of page numbers as you go, and think of a theme that you would like to write about.

HEA7: We are wrapping up our unit on Diet and Exercise, so we'll have a unit test soon. Many students have not handed in their "Healthy Eating Plan" yet. This is due and time is running short, so get done a.s.a.p.

SCI6: Our Unit Test on Energy will be next week and we'll move onto our last unit - Ecosystems.

Thursday, May 6, 2010

May 6

ELA20: There are many outstanding (that means unfinished) book reviews, narrative essays, and other assignments. Do your best to get these in a.s.a.p. since more work is surely coming down the conveyor belt.

SCI6: We will continue working on our ENERGY Unit. The chart we do today will be handed in for marking.

HEA7: There are many 'Healthy Eating Plans' still to be handed in. Work on them at home, at lunch, or wherever you can because these are due!

AFL and PCAP tests

Some provincial and national tests are coming up for some of our students.

Grade 8s and 11s are writing provincial assessments (AFLs) all this week. Try to be present in ELA20 for all classes so we can get them in by the deadline.

Selected grade 8s will be writing PCAP tests next week (May 5th), so letters will be going home to parents, and we will pull these students from classes for one morning.

Do your best to reflect the quality education here at EHS.

Back After Easter Break

We're back at school after a much deserved week off. So here is the latest news:

ELA 20: Mid-Term Reports are coming out this Friday. Have all work handed in by Tuesday if you don't want your mark weighted down by a 'zero'. Note: Most work will be accepted without penalty after the due date, but zeros will remain if nothing is received.

HEA 7A: We will start a section on exercise in the Diet and Exercise unit. Keep your notes up to date for the open book test that will end this section!

SCI 6: Moon Phases and Seasons will end our Exploring Space unit, and then we'll have a test before moving on to Energy.

It is way too early to start counting down school days until summer break, but we are in the home stretch - keep your notes up to date, turn in your assignments, and the year will finish on a high note.

HEALTH 7

Today will use some internet resources to calculate how many calories our body needs, and how many we are getting from common foods.

1) Follow the following link to calculate you body's need for fuel (i.e. how many calories you should be eating each day)... Calorie Calculator
Save this information in a Word file called "My Healthy Eating Plan."

2) Next, use the same site to calculate the amount of calories in your average day's food intake. Click on "Calories in Food" on the left-hand menu. You can input the foods you ate yesterday, or just your most common breakfast, lunch and dinner meals. Don't forget to include any snacks! Save this information in "My Healthy Eating Plan."

3) Next, use the same site to calulate how many calories you burn doing exercises. Click on "Calories Burned" at the top menu, and input data related to how many minutes you are active, and then find the calories burned below. Many activities are there, but not all, so come as close as you can, but don't sweat it too much. Save this information in "My Healthy Eating Plan."

4) Your last step will be to calculate how many calories you are taking in on average, minus the number you burn during your activities (count as if these were every second day). So add your daily intake with deductions (burned calories) to your daily intake without deductions and divide by two. Then subtract this number from your body's needs number (from number 1 above). Save this information in "My Healthy Eating Plan."

5) If you are done, see if there are places where your Healthy Eating Plan can be improved (examples might be: more or more frequent exercise, less snacks, more high nutrient and less high-calorie foods, etc.). Save this information in "My Healthy Eating Plan."

Parent Teacher Interviews

Friday March 19th from 8:30 we will be seeing parents for interviews. I hope many people are able to be there, but the schedule is, admittedly, less than ideal. We could not schedule an evening since so many staff are away this week on training. That said, we hope if you cannot make it on Friday that you will arrange to see teachers at your convenience next week - we try to make ourselves available.

That said, Juniors (6-8) have report cards, but Seniors (9-12) do not. For my classes, all students are given Markbooks at the end of the onth, so if you haven't gotten one, it may be lost in a binder or a locker. Ask me and I can email them, if that is more convenient.

For Senior reports, I do not mark penalties on late work, but I do need to report these grades all the same. When we come to a report card time, then, any work not received becomes a '0' which can be adjusted if I get the assignment later. Please encourage your young scholars to keep up with classroom assignments! It becomes difficult to see the light when assignments have piled up to a large degree.

For Junior reports, I will not allow students to leave work undone - they will stay in my classroom and complete their work even if it means missing gym class. The general rule that applies is: do your work and you will do fine. If you put off assignments,it will mean lost time in other (likely more fun) classes.

Please do come see me or contact the school for alternate interview times.

ELA20 - We'll be working on Narrative Paragraphs related to our visit to Gillen this week. Get creative with those childhood memories!

HEA7 - We will review and then our Unit 3 test. If you can do the review questions, you will do great on the test.

SCI6 - The Man in Space video will continue and hopefully we'll get some planetary data down from the NASA program.

ELA20

All Descriptive Paragraphs should be in, and we're nearly done questions on "First day in School." Remember to use MLA style citations for one quote per answer. For more information on MLA style follow this link:

Feb. 3rd ELA

We are done in-class work on the descriptive paragraph. These will be ready for Peer Conferences first thing tomorrow, and Final Drafts should be done by the end of the day Thursday. They can be hand-written.

Feb. 3 - New Semester for High School

We're just starting ELA20 for the second semester. We'll do some work around the Writing Process, and do a little introductory assignment, but nothing too heavy to start. Since our themes deal with recollections of childhood, we'll also plan a day to visit Gillen to jump start some memories from our youth.

We will start USSR (Un-Structured Silent Reading) in class today for the first 10-15 minutes. Bring a book or magazine with you.

SCI6a - We will finish our MovieMaker projects today and grade them in class. If we want to post them to YouTube, we can do that as well.

HEA7 - We're continuing with our 3rd Unit. Be sure your notes are up to date and with you. If you have no materials for class, I'll be sending you back to your lockers to get them - no exceptions.

Just 7 more school days until the break!

Accounting 10 Exam

The exam is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 26th at 1:00 p.m. The 2 students in grade 12 will write it the same day except at 9:00 a.m.

1. Complete the review and bring it with you.
2. Get cheatsheets done and ready to use (the 4 tips on finding errors might be especially useful)
3. ALL work must be submitted for marking by Thursday, Jan. 28th at 3:30. After this cut-off, it will be marked as a 0.
4. You will have lots of time to complete the question as long as you know what you are doing - thtis means if you're putting off the review to finish older assignments, you will probably not have time to learn this as you go. DO THE REVIEW FIRST, then catch up on other work.

That is all. This will be easy after you've completed the review and if you can find mistakes as the are made.

Wednesday, January 13, 2010

Accounting 10

We're getting close to Exam time, but there's a Unit Test first. Complete your spreadsheet from 8.5 and then move on to review chapter 8. The test will be Monday.

After this test, we will do review for the exam the rest of the week. You mat be looking for time to finish undone assignments, but the review is most important - the Exam counts as an entire Unit on its own! That said, any work not handed in by Thursday January 28th will get marked as a zero, so get at it!

Health Unit Test

We're ready for a test on our second Unit, so here's the review you'll need to check in your notes. If your have this information, you'll do fine.

1. Be able to draw and label the Total Health triangle. You should be able to define and explain the three sides and respond to a made-up situation related to it.

Definitions: Health, wellness, habit.

2. Be able to define and give examples of the Influences on Your Health – there are eight. You will be able to respond to a made-up situation related to them.

Definitions: Heredity, environment, culture, peers, media, technology, behavior, attitude.

3. There are 10 Health Skills. You will know what they all mean and you’ll be able to respond to questions about how they can affect your actions.

Definitions: Prevention, health skills, communication, advocate

4. Decision-Making: you will be able to draw and label a diagram of the decision-making process and also be able to explain the terms in the diagram.

Definitions: Decisions, consequences, risk, values

5. Setting Health Goals: You will be able to complete a Goal Chain related to your own health and explain your steps in achieving a goal.

Definitions: Goal, long-term goal, short-term goal

Back at it in 2010

We're back to school, and there's only 3 weeks until senior exams.

Accounting 10: Finish all outstanding assignments a.s.a.p. We will do Chapter 8, a Unit test, and then start exam preparations. You should be caught up by then or the workload will become overwhelming!

Health 7: There are many students with unfinished assignments (mostly our Responsibility Qs worksheet). Since our Unit 2 test will be in a week or so, get this done and handed in!

Science 6: We're working on our Wiki projects, and once we've done them we'll have a Unit Test on 'Eartghquakes and Volcanoes' before starting the next unit - 'Exploring Space'!
